Research & Evaluation

Commitment

The Active Aging Society is committed to improving the health of people over the age of 55 years. We partner with community organizations and leading researchers to implement, scale and evaluate effective programs.

We partner with the Active Aging Research Team at UBC and many other leading academic institutions worldwide to conduct rigorous studies on the impact and implementation of our programs.

History

In 2013, we partnered with the Active Aging Research Team and British Columbia’s Ministry of Health to create, enact, and evaluate a physical activity action plan for people over 55. Guided by principles of equity, evidence, geographical reach, collaborative partnerships and capacity-building within communities, we designed and implemented Choose to Move. Choose to Move is a flexible, scalable, choice-based program that effectively enhances older adults’ physical activity, mobility and social connectedness.

We have scaled up Choose to Move, which has now reached almost 13,000 older British Columbians. We continue to work with the Active Aging Research Team to adapt and continually improve Choose to Move based on feedback from participants and our many partners.

THE RESULTS ARE IN…

Research conducted by the Active Aging Research Team showed that Choose to Move, delivered at a broad scale, effectively increases physical activity, mobility, feelings of social connectedness, and access to community services, while decreasing loneliness.

Choose to Move provides an excellent opportunity for older Canadians to achieve many health benefits.
